IVCA to Honor Three Chicago Leaders in Venture Capital, Private Equity with Its Top Annual Awards


CHICAGO, November 4, 2013 – The Illinois Venture Capital Association today announced the 2013 recipients of three prestigious awards that recognize individuals in the Chicago venture capital and private equity industry.   

The honorees, who will receive their awards at the 12th annual IVCA Awards Dinner on Dec. 9, are:

  • Theodore L. “Ted” Koenig, President and CEO of Monroe Capital LLC, who will receive the Stanley C. Golder Medal which is named for the late pioneer of private equity investing and given to an individual who has made profound and lasting contributions to the private equity industry in Illinois.
  • James J. “Jim” O'Connor, Jr., Partner and Managing Director at MVC Capital, who will receive the Richard J. Daley Medal, awarded for direct and extraordinary support to the State of Illinois by participating in or being an advocate for the venture capital and private equity industry.
  • Jim Dugan, Co-founder, CEO and Managing Partner at OCA Ventures, who will receive the IVCA Fellows Medal, which recognizes an individual for outstanding contributions to the private equity profession and to the IVCA.

Mr. Koenig founded Monroe Capital in 2004.  Monroe Capital has invested more than $2.5 billion of capital in over 400 investment transactions since its inception supporting many private equity funds in Chicago and nationwide and also directly to unsponsored companies.  Prior to founding Monroe Capital in 2004, Mr. Koenig was President and CEO of Hilco Capital LP, a junior secured/mezzanine debt fund established in 2000.

“Ted has made a huge impact on the Chicago investment landscape from his time as a prominent transactional attorney, to his leadership at Hilco Capital as president and CEO, and to his founding of Monroe Capital,” said Bill Chapman, managing director of Baker Tilly Capital.  

Mr. O’Connor, a senior investment professional with more than a decade of private equity and venture capital experience, led the successful fundraiser recently for the MVC PE Fund that focuses on lower middle-market companies, and he also was a co-founder of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center in 2003, which supports entrepreneurs build high-growth, sustainable businesses.

“Jim does not think small when it comes to entrepreneurship and economic development,” says Paul Magelli, CEO of Pervasive Health Inc. “He wants Illinois and Chicago entrepreneurs on the top of the leaderboard in the world market.”

Mr. Dugan, a founding IVCA member, served five years as its treasurer, a director and member of the executive committee. He also served as chairman of the IVCA’s Legislative Committee and helped establish HB 3212 in 2002 that gave the state treasurer the authority to invest up to $60 million of the state’s investment portfolio in Illinois venture capital and private equity funds.

“Jim embodies the attributes of The Fellows Medal with his work in the IVCA, his standing in the industry and his standards of excellence on a personal and professional level,” says Carl Thoma, Managing Partner, Thoma Bravo.
